Ever heard of Joseph Addison?

This is what he wrote:

When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads
My weary, wand'ring steps he leads
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the cooling verdant landscape flow.

(Hymns #109, The Lord My Pasture Will Prepare)

Sultry glebe? Wow. It's hard to believe I haven't noticed that one before. I love it!

  1. I always thought of "The Jabberwocky" when I saw those lyrics.

  4. I just had to look up glebe, and am now less ignorant. It means land. So basically, sultry glebe = when it's hot outside. Next summer when I come in all sweaty, I'm going to say to my sons, "In the sultry glebe I faint". Then I can imagine that I am educated while they call me a dork.
